The award-wining indie film Dare Not Walk Alone hits theaters in select cities today (view trailer) .  The documentary chronicles the little-known story of the 1964 protests in St. Augustine, Florida.  The non-violent demonstrations led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were instrumental in the passage of the first Civil Rights Act.

The film was directed (as well as written, produced, and partially funded) by Jeremy Dean who was living in St. Augustine while attending college.  Through volunteering in many community service projects he heard stories of the protests from townspeople that had lived through it; so he uses these stories in the film, bouncing back and forth between actual footage, and present day interviews.   Using this format, he pays homage to the heroic  protestors of the past, takes an honest look at the changes that still need to be addressed today, and provides hope for reconcilliation in the future.

Private viewings of the film have already had an amazing impact, inspiring a formal apology for slavery from the state of Florida, as well as the passage of legeslation that clears anyone arrested under segregated laws in that state.  We will definitely be keeping you up to date on other positive results as the film opens to mainstream audiences.
