In the community of West Oakland there are 30,000 residents.  For many years these residents have had the option to get their food from the following locations: 53 liquor stores, 13 fastfood restaurants, and 0 grocery stores.  No wonder heart disease is the community’s leading killer.

These days, all that is changing thanks to the team from People’s Grocery.  People’s Grocery is a unique operation that is focused on using healthy food to help their community.  Probably the most unique characteristic of People’s Grocery is that they grow all their own food on urban farms right there in the West Oakland area.  This allows them to keep their prices more affordable.  Additionally, PG hosts regular community outreach programs such as free nutritional cooking classes as well as a varitety of nutrition and leadership workshops for teens.  They have also helped create new jobs by hiring employees for their farms, the Mobile Market and their various grocery delivery programs; and in 2009 they will be opening a worker-owned grocery store!

These guys are really using a creative approach to business that comes out as a win-win situation for them and the customers alike. Hopefully this turns out to be a success story that other company’s will want to emulate.
