In addition to telling our readers about the good things people are doing around the world, it has always been our goal here at Majority Mag, to join with those people and be a part of the good things they are doing.  Later this month, we will have the opportunity to do just that when we visit some of our good friends in Masiphumelele, South Africa.

Masiphumelele, which means “we will succeed” in the native Xhosa dialect is a township of about 30,000 people not too far outside of the city of Cape Town.  Settled in the early 1990’s after the end of Apartheid, the area has continually suffered from high rates of HIV/AIDS, unemployment, poverty, and crime.  In addition there are many child-headed homes where AIDS orphans raise their siblings.

In the midst of all these social issues, there are many loving people and organizations working to bring change and help make the townships namesake a reality; and we are excited for the opportunity to work with them.  Over the next couple weeks before we leave we’ll tell you a little more about some of the folks we’ll be partnering with and of course we’ll try to update you as much as possible while we’re there.  In the meantime, stay tuned for more good news everyday.

Impilo! (that’s Xhosa for Cheers/Good Health)
