Yesterday we told you the inspiring story of Melissa Stockwell, and mentioned she is being featured on a shirt for a line called Take Pride. This company designs shirts based on stories of individuals serving in our Armed Forces; and donates at least 20% of all their sales to causes like Wounded Warrior Project and USO. On their site you can read about these amazing individuals and the sacrifice and dedication they have shown defending our country, or buy a shirt to show your support and appreciation.

After months of anticipation, our friends at Rosa Loves have finally released a new T-Shirt. This one’s called “Mustard Seed of Baje Amli”, and like all their other tees, it has a beautiful story behind it. Sales of the new shirt will fund 30 scholarships to the Child Development Center in Baje Amli, Bangledesh; a school which was built by money raised from the Shakar Family shirt created by Rosa Loves last summer.
The design of the shirt is based off the mustard seed, a very tiny seed which grows into a huge tree. In the same way this small step of providing education for these children will help them grow into something great in the future. This is a cool shirt and an even cooler cause, but remember they are limited edition, so you better act fast before they’re gone.

Our friends over at To Write Love On Her Arms have two brand new items available for purchase in their Online Store. These aren’t just “new items” though, these are new items with “meaning”. First, (from left to right in pic above) is a new T-Shirt called Pick Up The Phone. 100% of the sales of these shirts go to Hopeline, a national suicide help center that helps nearly 50,000 people per year stay alive.
The second item is a book called Purpose For The Pain, by Renee Yohe, the girl whose story inspired TWLOHA. Purpose For The Pain is a collection of journals chronicling Renee’s journey from depression, addiction, and pain to sobriety, love and hope. The book isn’t actually released until August 23, but you can pre-order it and read excerpts on the TWLOHA site. So if you need a new shirt, or a new book to read while you lay out in the sun, you might as well get stuff that helps other people as well as you.

Car seats, prison blankets, leisure suits, coffee bags, and jeans are just some of the unique materials that have been used by Terra Plana to create their Worn Again line of eco-friendly shoes. By sourcing random materials from landfills close to their manufacturing sites, the British company has created 99% recycled kicks that help customers leave as small a “footprint” as possible.
Last month Terra Plana was recognized as the Ethical Footwear Retailer of the Year and they hope that by establishing an ethical, clean, and environmentally responsible process for manufacturing shoes they can inspire other companies to do the same.

FEED Projects just recently released their new FEED 100 Bags in Whole Foods stores across the country. Each bag purchased (at $29.99) provides 100 meals for children in Rwanda through The UN’s World Food Program (WFP). The bags, which are made of of organic cotton and natural burlap, can be used to in place of harmful plastic grocery bags and conveniently collapse down to a small zip up pouch for easy storage.
FEED Projects was started in 2006 by Lauren Bush (W’s niece). In their first year, just getting off the ground’ they were able to provide 1 year’s worth of meals to nearly 40,000 children. This year through their new partnerships they are hoping to double that mark by donating over $4 million to the WFP. With the price of gas continuing to rise many people are looking for alternate transportation solutions. One option worth looking into is Zipcar. This company offers nationwide car-sharing plans that let customers pay daily, monthly, or annually to use a car depending on how much driving they plan on doing. The rates vary by city, but actually end up being quite a bit less than owning your own car. Especially since everytime you use a Zipcar gas, insurance, and parking are already included.
The financial benefits are just the beginning. Zipcar is good for the environment as well. Surveys estimate that each Zipcar takes approximately 15 cars off the road; adding up to less greenhouse gas emission, less congestion, and less space needed for parking. In addition surveys show that Zipcars help build community because of the whole “sharing” concept and the fact that people tend to shop and interact more locally.
To be fair, Zipcar is mainly focused on urban areas, so if you don’t make your way into the city a lot its not going to be as beneficial, but overall, its an innovative concept that can be worthwile for many individual drivers, groups, or businesses.
