Cosby Sells Sweaters To Help Students

Friday, June 6th, 2008

If you haven’t picked up a Father’s Day Gift for your dad yet, I’ve got a great idea for you.  Why not give him a piece of history from one of TV’s all-time best dads, Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable?

Bill Cosby is auctioning off some of his famously loud sweaters on eBay in order to raise money for the Hello Friend/William Ennis Cosby Foundation.  The foundation, which was established in honor of Cosby’s late son, helps fund educational programs designed to empower students with unique learning styles to achieve despite their differences.

The sweaters are up for bid from now until June 12, so log on today, and help support a great cause.

Car seats, prison blankets, leisure suits, coffee bags, and jeans are just some of the unique materials that have been used by Terra Plana to create their Worn Again line of eco-friendly shoes.  By sourcing random materials from landfills close to their manufacturing sites, the British company has created 99% recycled kicks that help customers leave as small a “footprint” as possible

Last month Terra Plana was recognized as the Ethical Footwear Retailer of the Year  and they hope that by establishing an ethical, clean, and environmentally responsible process for manufacturing shoes they can inspire other companies to do the same.

FEED Projects just recently released their new FEED 100 Bags in Whole Foods stores across the country.  Each bag purchased (at $29.99) provides 100 meals for children in Rwanda through The UN’s World Food Program (WFP).  The bags, which are made of  of organic cotton and natural burlap, can be used to in place of harmful plastic grocery bags and conveniently collapse down to a small zip up pouch for easy storage.

FEED Projects was started in 2006 by Lauren Bush (W’s niece).  In their first year, just getting off the ground’ they were able to provide 1 year’s worth of meals to nearly 40,000 children.  This year through their new partnerships they are hoping to double that mark by donating over $4 million to the WFP.  You can pick up your FEED 100 Bags at a Whole Foods Market near you, or click here to find out more about how you can help provide food to children around the world.

Zipcar

With the price of gas continuing to rise many people are looking for alternate transportation solutions.  One option worth looking into is Zipcar.  This company offers nationwide car-sharing plans that let customers pay daily, monthly, or annually to use a car depending on  how much driving they plan on doing.  The rates vary by city, but actually end up being quite a bit less than owning your own car.  Especially since everytime you use a Zipcar gas, insurance, and parking are already included.

The financial benefits are just the beginning.  Zipcar is good for the environment as well.  Surveys estimate that each Zipcar takes approximately 15 cars off the road; adding up to less greenhouse gas emission, less congestion, and less space needed for parking.  In addition surveys show that Zipcars help build community because of the whole “sharing” concept and the fact that people tend to shop and interact more locally.

To be fair, Zipcar is mainly focused on urban areas, so if you don’t make your way into the city a lot its not going to be as beneficial, but overall, its an innovative concept that can be worthwile for many individual drivers, groups, or businesses.  So check out their savings calculator and see if Zipcar is for you.

The Hug Shirt

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

hug_shirt.jpg

Whether you want to admit it or not, we all love the feeling of a good hug.  The people at CuteCircuit definitely agree, and that’s why they created The Hug Shirt; a Bluetooth powered shirt that can send hugs between friends around the world.

The system is simple, all you need is the shirt and the HugMe program installed on your phone.  When you touch the sensors on your shirt your phone receives info such as body temperature, hug pressure, hug time, etc.  and sends it to your friend’s shirt.  You can even send “standard hugs” through the phone if you don’t have the shirt, but know your friend does.

Even though the Hug Shirt has received a lot of press, it still seems to be in the developmental stages and not available for purchase yet.  While no shirt could ever replace the feeling of a real hug, its always nice to know that someone is thinking of you even if they’re far away.

Alternative Motivation Posters

Friday, April 18th, 2008

patience.jpg

I’m sure you’ve all seen those motivational-themed posters featuring a guy climbing a huge rock or an eagle swooping down to grab a fish, right?  Well, those posters were great and will always be respected as the “pioneers” of inspirational-office art, but the folks at RightBrain Terrain have created a modern version of the series that is worth a look.

These Alternative Motivation Posters, or AMPS, as they call them, still have the same encouraging message, but with a fresh, trendy graphic asthetic.  Additionally, the posters are printed on 100% post-consumer recycled papers with vegetable based inks.  That combined with the absence of the giant faux frames sported by the original, make AMP’s more environmentally friendly as well.

ROSA LOVES: Clothing With a Purpose

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

rosa-loves-tees.jpg

Ok, I have to admit… I’m a sucker for unique T-Shirts.  Especially shirts that have a good message.  You know the ones that everytime you wear them people say, “cool shirt…what does that mean?”  So you can imagine my excitement when I ran across ROSA LOVES, a company that makes shirts based on individual stories of people in need.

Each shirt has a need attached to it such as an irrigation system for an orphanage in Tanzania, a new walker for a beloved community member, or the rebuilding of a grandmother’s burned down house.  The tees are very intricately designed with a graphic representation of the story on the front and the actual written version printed on the inside chest so the wearer can keep it close to his heart.

The best part of all is each tee is printed on a limited edition basis so that the only make as many of each shirt as they would need to sell to meet that need.  Once a need is met the shirt is discontinued and a new one with a new need is made.  ROSA LOVES is truly an inspiring example of using creativity to make a tangible difference in the lives of others.

Heart & Sole

toms2.jpg

Inspired by a traditional Argentinian work shoe, TOMS have become a footwear trend for fashion-forward young people here in the U.S.  While the lightweight and unique multi-colored prints are part of the appeal, the real draw is the cause.  For every pair of shoes purchased TOMS donates a pair, on your behalf, to a child in need.  These donations aren’t just corporate tax write-offs either.  Led by company founder Blake Mycoskie, TOMS employees and friends actually go to impoverished areas around the world and hand deliver brand new shoes to the people there.  You can even sign up to go with them if you want to help, or just go to the site and buy a pair for yourself…and someone in need.
